Tracking cargo transportation in Western Africa

IoT project of the year 2021

Problem

Cote D'Ivoire Chamber of Commerce and Industry defends the interests of local companies and businesses. One of the organization’s challenges was to facilitate safe transportation of goods between Cote D'Ivoire, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger and ensure compliance with the Inter-State Road Transit convention that implied several safety measures like 24-hour online monitoring, protection seals and beacons, etc. On the whole, the organization was facing the following issues:

  • trucks highjacking and illegal unloading of products;
  • manual documents processing that often took a lot of time;
  • uncareful driving.

Solution

TOUREX CORPORATE, Cote D'Ivoire, developed a solution that automated paper flow ensured the safety of the transported goods, and compliance with state and international regulations.

The hardware installed on the trucks is sending data to Wialon, which in turn provides data flow to the custom-developed solution. Here are the details:

  • To secure the goods inside the trucks, the vehicles were equipped with Jointech JT709A e-locks. The access to trucks became recordable.
  • All the roads that are allowed for goods transportation were imported to Wialon. In case a driver leaves the authorized route or a geofence or makes a long suspicious stop, a dispatcher gets a notification, and it’s sent to the police afterward.
  • Some more notifications were created for a situation when a truck is crossing a checkpoint, or when a driver violates the rules, e.g., when the vehicle has been in the port for more than 48 hours or makes a stop earlier than 1 hour before the previous one.
  • User accounts were created in the monitoring system so that any party involved had access to the required data.
  • Open API made it possible to register the trucks in the system fast and in bulk. Previously it took 48h to 72h to make the trucks visible to customs authorities.
  • The Eco Driving module in Wialon helps control driving behavior.

TOUREX CORPORATE is planning to implement video monitoring for certain types of goods.

The company is also going to arrange the monitoring of raw materials such as cocoa, coffee, cashew nuts on their way from the fields to the weighbridge, factories, and ports.

Result

Now, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Cote D'Ivoire can effortlessly monitor trucks with goods and know that they are safe during transportation. The solution provides control over more than a thousand units, offers a smart system of notifications, connects with third-party systems such as the customs platform, and ensures the impressive list of state and international requirements is taken into account.

Protection against theft

Thanks to e-locks and alert notifications, trucks are safer from cargo theft and hijacking.

Automation of processes

Processing of documents was automated. Now, the client doesn’t have to wait for 72 hours until a  truck is registered in the system.

Driving behavior under control

EcoDriving helps monitor driver behavior. The client is notified in case of harsh driving and can take measures to secure the transported goods.

Compliance

From speed limits to safety rules, from tracking visibility to route completion, all the steps of goods transportations can be controlled on a large scale.
