Optimizing the search for cost-effective cargo transportation routes

Problem

Problem

Beltechnoservice from Belarus is engaged in international cargo transportation. The company was looking for a solution that would optimize routing and thus reduce transportation costs:

  • When selecting an optimal route, it was difficult to consider all the road signs for trucks and the latest changes on the roads. 
  • Transferring the information about routes from the manager to drivers was time-consuming. They had to manually write down all the road numbers and addresses.

Solution

The UTruck company offered the Belarusian shipper a solution that helps select the least expensive routes and automates the process of sending them to the driver.

  • The solution consists of a web application for logistics specialists and managers and a mobile application for drivers. The apps operate with routes crossing the EU and CIS countries.
  • The solution copes with several tasks:
    • searching for the cheapest routes taking into account toll roads;
    • finding the fastest route;
    • selecting the type of driver's salary calculation (per hour and per kilometer);
    • considering the restrictions on the fuel volume in the tank (for example, you can’t import more than 600 liters into Poland, so the system will offer a different route for a vehicle with a larger tank);
    • the possibility to exclude certain countries from the route (if there is no travel permit).
  • The application has a wide range of settings that allow you to calculate the route cost with high accuracy. Fuel consumption, AdBlue, weight, vehicle dimensions, and many other parameters are taken into account.
  • The manager sends the selected route with one click via the web application, and the driver receives it in the mobile app.
  • The mobile app uses offline maps and does not require a permanent internet connection.

An essential advantage of the solution is UTruck's own database of toll roads and road signs, which is regularly updated.

The UTruck specialists trained the client’s personnel on the peculiarities of working with the application.

Result

UTruck provided the client with a solution that allows them to accurately estimate the cost of international transportation routes and select the most cost-effective one.

Accuracy

The difference between the costs calculated by the application and the actual transportation one was no more than 2%.

The work of logistics specialists, managers, and drivers has been simplified.
