Gurtam plants trees in Lithuania: the green initiative continues

While Gurtam is known for helping businesses run their fleets more efficiently, the company is also passionate about making our corner of the world a safer, more sustainable, and greener place. This spring, Gurtam is back with the tree-planting initiative.

The first forest to be

In the tech world, everything moves fast — innovations, updates, breakthroughs. But we often forget that nature changes quickly, too. Give it a year or two, and even a small patch of land can look entirely different.

Last April, just before Earth Day, the Gurtam team traded office chairs for shovels and headed to the Trakai district near Vilnius. Together, we planted 1,100 trees, turning an empty field into what's to become a young forest. It wasn't just about getting hands dirty and spending time together — it was about making a real difference in our local environment and showing we care about the future.

Look at how the landscape has transformed. These satellite images show the same area where the Gurtam team planted trees just a year ago. You can clearly see how the once-empty field is already beginning to turn green and alive — a visible result of that day’s efforts.

Trees Planting 2025

This year, to mark Earth Day, Gurtam is partnering again with Hold Earth to expand the forest-growing efforts. We're focusing on native Lithuanian trees — pine and birch. These aren't random choices — they're the species that naturally thrive in the given landscape and support local wildlife. This time, our efforts are taking root in the Molėtai District, a beautiful area in northeastern Lithuania.

Last year, I participated in this Gurtam activity with my family, and watching the team come together to plant those first trees was incredible — quite different from our typical office routine. Now, we're even more excited to add to this living legacy and repeat the campaign. I think it’s a great way to involve our children, too, as it's a meaningful contribution to their future, showing them the importance of preserving nature.

The planting approach

Gurtam people were not creating neat rows of trees like you'd see on a tree farm. Instead, they planned to mimic nature's pattern, planting trees in a way that looked and functioned like a wild forest. It's a bit messier, but that's exactly how forests should be.

Through the partnership with Hold Earth, Gurtam ensures the planted trees have the best chance to thrive and make up a forest that will be here for generations.

Measuring impact

Numbers tell the story of our commitment to environmental sustainability. This spring, our dedicated team of Gurtam volunteers came together to plant hundreds of young trees. This is how it all looks in numbers:

• Team effort: the planting day brought together over thirty Gurtam employees, from developers to managers, all working side by side to create this new forest.

• Growing space: the selected plot in the Molėtai District provides around 500 sq.m. of ample space for our young forest to flourish, carefully chosen to ensure optimal growing conditions for each sapling.

• Future impact: the team planted 2000 trees. As these trees mature, they'll contribute to carbon absorption and help combat climate change. Through our partnership with Hold Earth, we'll track their progress and CO2 absorption rates annually.

Being part of this initiative truly makes me proud. It’s incredible to see that a tech company like ours can not only build smarter solutions for fleet optimization and route efficiency, but also make a real difference for the environment. Helping reduce CO₂ emissions through our software is great — but planting trees and seeing the change with your own eyes feels even more meaningful.
